Warm U.S. weather poses crop risk

Jan 18, 2006, 22:30 GMT
WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- For the third consecutive week above-normal temperatures prevailed across the United States last week, exposing some crops to risks.

Throughout the northern Great Plains and most of the Corn Belt and Ohio Valley, average temperatures exceeded normal causing further depletion of protective snow cover in these regions, the U.S. Agriculture Department said Wednesday.

Dry conditions persisted in the Great Plains and Southwest, further depleting soil moisture. However, moderate precipitation in the upper Delta and eastern Corn Belt helped winter wheat in those areas.

Moderate to heavy precipitation in the Pacific Northwest improved soil moisture in the inland crop producing areas while increasing snow pack in the higher elevations.

Warm weather in California has deterred dormancy in fruit trees and caused blooming in some orchards, while lingering wet conditions in some areas caused worsened small grain condition and delayed vegetable harvest.

In Texas, winter wheat was rated mostly poor to very poor due to extremely warm temperatures and dry, windy conditions. Warm weather in Georgia increased insect activity and the spread of disease in pastures but improved small grain conditions. Cool temperatures slowed vegetable growth in north Florida.

weather in va

For three weeks in here in central virginia the weather was been in the upper 50's ang upper 60's one day the temperature climed to 78 degrees and back down to tthe 30's the next day. we've had hail and summer time style thunder storms. record high temperatures regularly. Its frightening how comfortable so many people are with this spring time weather in the coldest months of virginia. The weather has been warmer longer every winter since ive lived here (eleven years). The only time people I think people will stop to pay attention to how unusual all of this is will be when their summers start getting fucked with. Let's see how calm and content everyone is when it snows in august in a couple of years. or when the birds start coming back north early and freeze to death the next month dropping dead all over.
