On July 15th, the "Group of 8" (G8) richest industrialized countries will gather in St. Petersburg, Russia to plot their continued commodification and domination of the planet, this time under the euphemistic banner of "Energy Security." A leaked G8 "Communique on Energy Security" calls for trillions of dollars in new investments in oil, gas and coal production worldwide, plus wide-scale global expansion of nuclear energy. With runaway climate change* looming just over the horizon, such neoliberal business-as-usual poses a direct threat to the continuation of life on Earth as we know it.
Resistance is self defense. The G8 agenda promotes petroleum-dependent "Energy Security" that pollutes our land and atmosphere, exploits poor and indigenous communities, and scorches the Earth's climate. Their recipe for catastrophe must be met with our global resistance!
July 15th will be an International Day of Action Against Climate Change. As G8 energy ministers promise trillions in new subsidies to the industries destroying our planet and our future, we will take action to shut them down! This is a call for autonomous, decentralized actions appropriate for your town, city, or bioregion. Use this international day of action to support local struggles against oil refineries, gas pipelines, strip mines and coal-fired power plants. Disrupt the financial backers of the fossil fuel industry. Host teach-ins to spread sustainable post-petroleum living skills. Find a weak point in the infrastructure of resource exploitation and throw a literal or symbolic wrench in the works. Visit your local polluters and give 'em hell!
The July 15th International Day of Action Against Climate Change is being mobilized by Rising Tide North America, a new network initiated in the US by the Earth First! Climate Caucus, with inspiration and support from the UK's vibrant Rising Tide direct action movement for climate justice and against climate change. Rising Tide North America is actively mobilizing July 15th actions in local bioregions, as well as reaching out to environmental justice, climate action and radical sustainability movements in all the G8 countries plus the Global South.
Rising Tide North America is building a large collection of outreach and agit-prop materials that can be used by groups around the continent (and the world) to organize locally. *19 of the 20 hottest years on record have occurred since 1980. Islands in the South Pacific are already evacuating due to rising sea levels. Storms and hurricanes are growing more severe. Polar bears are drowning as their icy habitat breaks apart and drifts out to sea. Greenland and Antarctica are melting. Everyday we spew more greenhouse gases burned from fossil fuels into the atmosphere; everyday we are one step closer to what scientists refer to as "the tipping point," on the verge of catastrophic and irreversible climate chaos.
'Climate concerns' or remade politics?
"Resistance is self defense"; the rhetoric of self promotion, or the attempt to 'reproduce' a 'platform of protest' that once was based within certain 'economic' principles which came from within a particular 'socio-political background'?
The reality is that there is NOT promotion of 'petroleum dependence' as there is NOT viable any alternative as yet, 'rhetoric' will NOT fuel either electrical power generation OR vehicles and OPINION will not alter this to 'remake reality'.
There is insufficient energy within that Solar Radiation that becomes surface incident to make a 'Solar World' possible, and with conversion of that available energy into 'electrical energy' now around 80%, this should be obvious (it is to most everyone NOT blinkered by 'enviro-politics').
'Wind power' generation of 'electrical energy' suffers from the relatively LOW 'electrical energy production' and then needing to be placed at the far end of long runs of Metal Wire. The reason 'traditional generation' is so 'high powered' is to deal with the 'electrical energy bleed' the Metal Wire grid produces. This can only be overcome by NOT using Metal Wire as the distribution medium for generated 'electrical power'.
Any attempt to improve 'turbine generator' technology will advantage all generation systems using such, NOT just 'Wind/Tide' systems, which includes Uranium fuelled utilities....
The alternative that the G8 will take, if they regard these 'protests' in any manner, will be the 'easy path' now much shorted, to Uranium fuelled generation unless of course more of the sensible and astute amongst us begin to IGNORE the platforming of 'greenhouse concepts' and the SUPPOSED 'greenhouse warming / climate altering' non-science that IS leading us all into the Uranium Age. Pollution is an important consideration, but it is NOT creating either 'greenhouse warming' or 'greenhouse related' climate alterations. The 'effect' is simply NOT possible or viable with regard to the actual properties of the real materials 'it' would involve.
As for the points mentioned in the original 'article', at the point (*), these have ALL been given treatment within this site already and are NOT seen as related to any supposed 'greenhouse effect or even valid SCIENCE:-
** The smaller Islands are infact going to see NATURAL increases in Sea Level, they do need to adapt, the low point of sea level was only 15,000 to 20,000 years ago, and sea level has been rising since then.
** Climate is rising from a glaciation (only 20,000 to 30,000 years before present) and so rising median temperature is NOT unexpected
** Temperature records in a manner of SCIENCE are only 250 years old, attempts at inference from this record ESPECIALLY over the past 30 years is NOT producing any VALID trend of any REAL 'climate process'.
** Greenland is ONLY land covered with ice and has been only COVERED by the last glaciation, now it is being UNCOVERED and the Polar Regions are shrinking BACK to their 'start position'. NOTICE the name 'Greenland'.......
** Polar Bears will MOVE, they are not as silly as some 'protesters' it seems...
** There is no valid 'tipping point, no valid production of any supposed 'greenhouse effect' and no near 'climate catastrophe'...
Also, there is little real 'exploitation', the income from oil sales from the poorer Nations is to garner funds to fight the endemic and pandemic DISEASE inflicting these populations, most with very sort median life expectancies. This has seen comment already, the 'western protestor' seems unable to realise the difference tween a REAL cause, and a 'fabricated cause'. The MAJORITY of the public have no such cognitive problem...
Perhaps the 'G8 protest' should have remained on its original 'economic basis', at least then there was consistency and some element of REAL 'social validity'.
