CRITICAL MASS - NEWCASTLE - Australia
Categories:
This is the monthly reminder for that fun bicycle
ride, celebrating all good things bicycley – Newcastle
style.
This month has been promoted heavily around town and
at the UNI and everyone can find out how many people
there will be if they turn up on the day. The first
person to guess the correct number of people by
posting a message on the Newcastle Critical Mass yahoo
group will win a bike. Multiple guesses are not
allowed. Proper ID will be required to pick up the
bike at the end of the Critical Mass ride. If you
don’t want to post to yahoo group, post to this email
address. The bike has to be picked up at the end of
the ride.

Bicycling invisibly in gutters Car door lanes:
An unseen 6 year old opens a car door in front of you. An instinctual reaction hasyou swerve around it, the 1st car passing you swerves quickly and misses you. The 2nd car tailgating behind the first car hasn't seen you yet..
BEFORE bicyclist's rights (& safety) on the road get reduced further (recent
reductions within last 8 years are not known by 99.99% of people), once a month we
can become the dominant transport form displaying a better way and possibilities
towards a car free city..

It is that safe cycling is required.
It is that safe cycling is required, but it is NOT sufficient to only place blame on the other road users if accidents occur.
Awareness of what a 'driver' CAN see is more the responsibility of the cyclist to be aware of. Is there any 'safety discussion' preceding this ride to educate those taking part in such matters? The NSW police would be able to provide a community liaison officer I am sure to conduct such a discussion.
Ride bicycles, I wish you all well. Personally I walk, and use public transport, but I do not expect that to be able to alter the REAL situation either, even is we ALL walked and used 'public transport'.
Realise that the population of, for example China, is lowering it's use of bicycles and purchasing private motor vehicles. This altered schedule of ownership even before other improvements to lifestyle are produced in either private accommodations or associated services (still I hear are used 'public' neighborhood toileting buildings).
Next, the average age of Western populations is increasing; within the next 40 years ~30% of the Australian population will be averaging over 60 years of age. Unless we have a larger number of people inputted that is, but I do not think they would travel to reside in Australia and wish to perhaps 'continue' to ride bicycles.
It is unlikely that cycling will become the 'dominate transport' especially in Australia, the distance are simply too large. Also, there is no 'freedom' from 'fossil oil' in 'cycling'.
Fossil oil is not only used for fuel, and Humanity has become near totally reliant on 'fossil oil' derivatives to manufacture the materials incorporated into production for everything from hosiery to carpet, cloths to cars, and furniture to homes.
Bicycle tyres, brake pads, vinyl 'seats' and the popular 'serious cyclist' attire are all containing such materials produced from derivatives of 'fossil oil' diffraction.
Look for the word 'synthetic' and begin to realise, we cannot escape as some would like to OPINION, as rapidly as these few would like to opinion. It will take the better part of a century to totally divest Humanity of a need, be it direct OR indirect, for use of 'fossil oil' based materials, fuel or other.
The situation is that ALL the other products derived from fossil oils will STILL be needed, so the diffraction of fossil oils WILL continue, and so there WILL be fossil oil based fuel products, but maybe not in the same volume, which will be supplemented with bio-fuel oil volume and be combustible in present technology engine designs near immediately often with little other engineering alterations.
These bio mix fuels are seen as being able to reduce pollution by up to ~70% and can run readily in compression based engine processes (as used in turbines for example). It is those presents fossil based 'fuels' are almost made from the more volatile 'residuals' after the more 'useful' materials have been removed.
