Greg Hunt MP on: Climate Change - Preparing For the Coming Century

Climate change has recently been thrust into the centre of Australia’s political debate. It is a reality. But what will be the real economic impact of climate change? And how will Australia play its part domestically and internationally to meet the challenges of climate change over the coming century?

The Hon Greg Hunt MP, Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment will discuss Australia’s need to take bold and far-reaching steps to protect the environment and secure our long-term energy needs. Australia is in the midst of an historic shift: by incorporating the cost of pollution into energy production, we have a once in a century opportunity to move from a high emissions to low emissions economy. The real question is not whether we do this, but how we manage the transition.

Petrol and carbon taxes will hurt the most vulnerable. Industry needs economic certainty to prosper, and taxes on inelastic goods – like petrol and heating – will have little effect but to punish the most economically vulnerable in society. Government, industry and the community must work in partnership to implement economically rational, socially responsible policy solutions which directly invest in cleaning up our power stations.

The Policymakers: A series of public forums to engage with policymakers on ideas that shape our society

Ideas drive policy. Yet the public sphere provides little opportunity for people to hear and engage with those ideas first hand. The CIS Policymakers series provide a platform for policy thinkers and practitioners to share their ideas and vision for Australia’s future. The forums go beyond the five second grab allowing policy leaders to engage with the audience about their ideas and policy plans.
