No to Coal: Kingsnorth Power Station Meeting

Categories:

Over the next two months John Hutton MP, the UK Minister for BERR, will be making his decision as to whether there will be a public enquiry into E.ON's proposed power station at Kingsnorth in Kent. If this plant is allowed to be built, we can wave goodbye to any carbon reduction targets in one fell swoop; this would be a disaster for the environment and Britains claim to be a world leader in combating climate change. The new coal-fired power stations would lock the UK into decades of high carbon electricity generation, and as such warrants the public inquiry that the local authority in the Kingsnorth area has requested.

People & Planet along with WDM and Greenpeace have arranged a London wide planning meeting for 18th of March at 6pm at Gordon House 106, University College London (Nearest Tube station is Euston Square, see calendar for details).

At this meeting we will be planning a mass action in Parliament Square followed by a lobby of Parliament on the Tuesday 1st of April (Fossil Fools Day). We are also getting a coal power station, with smoke, built as a prop for us to use in our campaigning; we hope to start with this being built in Parliament Square. We have an artist on board and can mobilise students in London but we really need other groups and people at the planning meeting and on the day in order to make this effective. This meeting would also be a good time to promote the other actions that are going on around Kingsnorth or Heathrow.
