Residents from the town of Mantoudi, on the island of Evia,
yesterday staged a rally to protest against the Public Power
Corporation’s plans to build a coal-fired plant just 2 kilometers from
their homes. Alexis Tsipras, the leader of the Coalition of the Radical
Left (SYRIZA), attended the protest, backing the objections of
residents and local organizations. He criticized Greece’s insistence on
using fossil fuels for its power, saying most other European countries
were curbing their use of coal and looking at other, cleaner forms of
energy.
