Fantastic Fossil Fools Day!‏

First of all, a massive congratulations to everyone who took part in
fossil foolery of all kinds. We should all be really proud of the amazing
actions we took.

But let’s not stop now. Let’s build on the contacts we’ve made with these
actions, strengthen our connections across the world and get involved
wherever we live. On the cusp of runaway climate change, every day needs
to be a day of action, and there are a thousand ways to subvert the fossil
fuel economy wherever you are.

And coming up:
May 1st: (False Capitalist Solutions)
June 3rd (Food and Climate Change)
August 3rd-11th: Camp for Climate Action (www.climatecamp.org.uk)

WHAT HAPPENED ON FOSSIL FOOLS DAY?
Action round-ups are here:
www.risingtide.org.uk/node/273 (UK, with loads of great photos)
www.fossilfoolsday.org (International)
(Email info@risingtide.org.uk with any action reports or photos that we've
missed out)

In total there were 35 separate protests in 20 places across the UK, and
around 100 actions in North America. About 500 people were involved in the
UK, and well into the thousands around the world. In the UK, the actions
ranged from big, disruptive blockades of fossil fuel infrastructure
(including one of Europe’s largest open-cast coal mines at Merthyr Tydfil,
the UK’s largest gas terminal at Bacton in Norfolk and the offices of E.ON
of Kingsnorth notoriety in Nottingham) and related financial and PR
offices, to a series of wonderfully creative pranks in keeping with the
spirit of April Fools Day. Some highlights: the launch of ev-EON, carbon
capture in a bottle (complete with fantastic spoof website
www.ev-eon.com); the FA being issued a red card for accepting sponsorship
from E.ON; and cleaning up greenwash at Land Rover's PR agency.

Check out www.fossilfoolsday.org for all the amazing actions in other
countries, including the US, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South
Africa; as well as media coverage from around the world.

WHAT DID FOSSIL FOOLS DAY ACHIEVE?
There is a growing movement of people taking radical direct action
against climate change around the country and the world, but often it’s
hard to feel the impact of our actions because they’re disconnected. On a
day like Fossil Fools Day, we come together, our local actions are
magnified, we’re inspired to continue the struggle, and to win.

Taking on the fossil fuel empire is an audacious thing to do - but it’s
necessary if we are to survive. Fossil Fools Day was a step in that
direction, a step towards stopping new fossil fuel projects from
happening, a step towards scaling back those we’ve already got. It was a
step towards shaking the foundations of our blinkered belief in the need
for fossil fuels, a battle in the reputational war against the climate
criminals, and a wobble on their profit margins. Most of all, Fossil Fools
Day showed that we are many and powerful, that we are growing and we’re
not going away.

GET INVOLVED
There are climate direct action groups and contacts around the country, so
if you’re looking to take action on climate change where you live, check
out
www.risingtide.org.uk/community or
www.networkforclimateaction.org.uk/toolkit/groups.html for your nearest
contact. We can also help out if you’d be interested in getting a local
group off the ground yourself. And whether you’re just starting out or are
part of a well-established group, check out the resources pages on the
websites above for ideas for action, film clips, leaflets and other
materials for stalls, tips on working in groups and more.

Congratulations again everyone, can’t wait to see what we all do next!

PS. Obviously, feel free to post this to websites, blogs, newsletters etc.
- and get in touch if you'd like more info about the day, print quality
photos, etc.
