U.S.: Step it Up - Where will it go?

The success of the Step it Up '07 events in the U.S. (reportedly 14000 events nation-wide) begs the question: where will this segment of the climate crisis movement go? While it's encouraging that Middlebury College students, guided by Bill McKibben, initiated the campaign, one can't help but note the disconnect apparent in the communication structure as it appears on their website.

It seems all communication from reader to local organizer is routed through the organization. In other words, if you wanted to communicate directly to a Step it Up organizer in your area you would have to wait until your message to them was routed thru the website and the organizer sent you a response. This may well be simply an anti-spam function, but passed experience with trying to contact McKibben personally (a near impossible feat) leads this observer to wonder if the seeds of elitism might sprout within what appears to be a successful grass-roots effort.

National organizations in the U.S. often fall pray to the trappings of elitism. Here in the States we have witnessed this unfortunate dynamic with United for Peace & Justice; Code Pink; Greenpeace; and other hierarchal organizations. Let's hope the Middlebury College students don't fall into that undemocratic trap. Your thoughts?
