topic/category/taxonomy re-think

I think topic/category/taxonomy needs a bit of a re-think

for one, forum posts are currently required to be in one or more of the "topics":
* Announcements
* CDMs
* Climate Actions
* Climate Justice
* Events
* Fossil Fuels
* Freak Weather
* Nuclear
* Original News
* Other Press
* Press Releases
* Renewables
* Science
* Skeptics
(which is why this forum post is in "other press")
and also in one of the "categories" - beaking news, climate actions, or News Sources.
that doesn't make sense, cause this forum post isn't any of these.

aside from that, all normal posts are required to be one of the three "categories", but that means that they just pile up as "unpublished" if they aren't (is that right?) perhaps there needs to be more categories (not just news-type categories). what about theoretical stuff? opinion pieces?

also, it would probably be a good idea to have a "hidden" category for pieces that aren't suitable.

modelling most of this off the sydney indymedia layout. check it out here: http://sydney.indymedia.org.au/sitemap

drupal 4.7 now has free-tagging (or folksonomy), which means we could set up a taxonomy allowing people to put in any keywords/phrases that suit their posts. anyone think this is worth trying?

done and done. welcome to the new categorisation

new categorisation is done! we now have a brand spanking new "Geography" category, with global and sub regions specified. UK, USA, and Australia are the only countries listed at the moment, as they seem to be the countries with the most input. we can easily ad more later.

also, the categories have been re-thunk. the "Topics are all topical now, and there's a few more "categories" - news sources, announcements and other stuff like that.

cheers

removed the forums from the newswire view.

forums in newswire

sorry, I should have mentioned that the reason I've brought this up is that if I post a forum topic, I HAVE to chose a topic and category, and for that reason, my forum posts are appearing in the newswire (check it out on the right

good topics

the topics are good, I just think that there needs to be a "climateIMC" topic for normal website stuff, like this, or similar.

for the features, there are other types of news than "breaking news", "climate actions", and "News Sources". this doesn't include a few things, such as opinion pieces and scientific stuff. perhaps it could just be covered with an "other features" category.

there should perhaps also be another taxonomy for admin stuff, with "hidden" and "feature", such as indymedia has.

the other way of doing it would be to remove these categoris

categories

hi ned,

i think we decided to use these categories (i'm not opposed to them changing at all) to help define the content of the site to make it more useful to readers and to discourage non-climate related posts.

it was a difficult issue, given the scope possible of open publishing, but the limitations of a theme.
