CAN: Ardoch Algonquin against Uranium mine

Subject: [NBL] Ardoch Algonquin against Uranium mine

Dear Friends,
I'm guessing you've heard by now the outcome of last week's court
case regarding the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation's efforts to protect
30,000 acres of land north of Sharbot Lake from an open pit uranium
mine. Bob Lovelace has been incarcerated and hefty fines were laid
against the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation and their co-chief, Paula
Sherman. I was in court all day Tues, Thurs & Fri and I can tell you
that this judge's harsh decision was egregiously misinformed. Justice
was not served.

For now, a few things are happening:

1) I'm taking orders for NO URANIUM T-shirts as a fundraiser - cost

New Facebook group for Climate IMC supporters

Climate Indymedia face particular challenges as an entirely online organisation. Unlike other local indys, we don't get to know each other by having physical meetings and socialising. To try to alleviate this problem, lets try a few new things.

Love it or hate it, you have to admit that Facebook is a great social networking tool. To facilitate better communication and solidarity amongst the participants of Climate Indy, I have set up a Facebook group here:

Germany: Cop-9, not so good

Global Forest Coalition is appalled at the lack of political will displayed at the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Ninth Conference of the Parties (COP-9) and the direction the CBD is headed. Although countries in the Africa Group were unified in protecting biodiversity, other countries such as Brazil, New Zealand, Canada, Australia, and Japan blocked most progressive attempts to contain the alarming influence of industry now found in the CBD. Very disappointedly the CBD now makes it easier for genetically engineered trees to be commercialized, which sets back the gains achieved at the last CBD (COP-8) in Curitiba, Brazil in 2006.

U.S.: Asheville Rising Tide breaks ground at Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers' front yard, harnesses the power of hot air

May 25, 2008 - Charlotte, NC Today, activists with Asheville Rising Tide
broke ground on a new 800 Mw clean energy power plant in Duke Energy CEO
Jim Rogers front yard. The power plant will tap into a previously
unexplored energy source known as hot air which has been found in large
concentrations at Roger's residence, 330 Eastover Rd, Charlotte, NC.
"The hot air emitting from Jim Rogers mouth has been around for quite
some time, but the last couple of years has seen an exponential growth
of this untapped energy source as Rogers parades around the country
calling for greenhouse gas reductions while building the dirty Cliffside
coal plant. This was simply an opportunity we couldn't pass up," said

Greenpeace demands urgent passage of RE Bill

Greenpeace today challenged Filipino lawmakers to stop procrastinating and to move swiftly to pass the Renewable Energy Bill to ensure the country's energy security and to help mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. At a special media briefing ahead of the Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior's visit to Manila as part of its 'Quit Coal Tour of Asia and the Pacific", Greenpeace also hailed commitments from several legislators, like Sen. Miguel Zubiri and Sen. Pia Cayetano to sponsor anti-coal resolutions in the Senate which also call for the phase-out of coal fired power plants and a significant uptake of clean, renewable energy power instead.

'QUIT COAL' : Greenpeace targets incoming coal shipment at Pagbilao coal plant

Greenpeace activists aboard Rainbow Warrior, anchored alongside Pagbilao coal plant, painted the words 'Quit Coal' on the hull of a 223 meter vessel 'Sam John Spirit' standing by to unload yet another shipment of thousands of tons of coal at Pagbilao power plant in the Philippines. The Rainbow Warrior is in the Philippines on its 'Quit Coal-Save the Climate' tour of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The Rainbow Warrior has anchored alongside the said coal-fired power plant since yesterday to expose how coal causes climate change and to send a message that the Philippines should stop building and expanding harmful coal-fired power plants. The Pagbilao coal plant is one of nine currently in the government's pipeline for either expansion or construction.
