AUST: Friends of the Earth joins coal blockade

Members and supporters of environment organisation Friends of the Earth Australia will converge on Newcastle this Thursday to join the first Australian Camp for Climate Action.

Friends of the Earth supporters from across Australia will join in the blockade of Newcastle's coal train line on Sunday and direct actions at coal infrastructure on the Monday.

A Friends of the Earth "neighborhood" will be established in the camp, and activists will deliver workshops and speeches on a diverse range of topics from the problems of bio-fuels to the importance of assisting climate refugees.

"The Garnaut report has made crystal clear the urgency of action on climate change", Damien Lawson, Friends of the Earth Climate Justice Coordinator said today.

"We will be joining with hundreds of other Australians in using civil disobedience to prevent the coal trains transporting their greenhouse pollution."

"Our action is not just for us and our children but for the millions around the world already suffering because of climate change."

"We can not keep burning coal and return to a safe climate."
