Coral Reef and Ocean Biodiversity threatened by Climate Change

Australian marine scientists have issued a warning on the increasing acidity of the world's oceans and its impact on coral reefs, and through the food web, the productivity and biodiversity of oceans. Scientists at the Australian Institute of Marine Science in Townsville claim that coral on Australia's Great Barrier Reef reached a tipping point in 1990 with coral growth having slowed by more than 14 percent since then. The unprecedented decline has been caused by a combination of rising sea surface temperatures and ocean acidification. At the current rate of decline, coral will be unable to grow by 2050.

On Thursday 27th November 2008, PIRC will launch the report "Climate Safety" at Friends Meeting House, Euston, London.

In this report, a full risk assessment is conducted based on the most recent Climate Science, resulting in a clear, incontrovertible message that we should be aiming for Zero Carbon, as fast as is humanly possible.

The Public Interest Research Centre have drawn on the inspiration of the Australian work "Climate Code Red" in this, their decision to raise the stakes on environmental policy in the UK.

"Climate Code Red" has had an enormous impact on the Australian Government's equivalent of the Stern Review from economist Professor Ross Garnaut.

McKibben: The Most Important Number in the World

"What's the most important number in the world?"

by Bill McKibben

What's the most important number in the world?

The temperature of the human body? The freezing point of water? The length of a football pitch?

Or is it 350? It's a new number--almost no one knows about it yet. But it may well mark the line between a working human civilization and endless chaos.
